National Autism Strategy: A big step for autistic Australians

Autism Australia

National Autism Strategy focuses on social inclusion and employment opportunities for autistic Australians.

The launch of the National Autism Strategy has been met with enthusiasm by People With Disabilities WA (PWdWA), a leading disability advocacy organisation. Unveiled in Perth by Minister for Social Services, the Hon. Amanda Rishworth MP, the strategy aims to address the significant challenges faced by autistic Australians, including a staggering unemployment rate six times higher than the national average.

PWdWA, an organisation led by and for people with disabilities, is committed to playing a crucial role in the strategy’s success. “As an autistic individual who faced school exclusions, I understand the challenges firsthand,” shared Interim CEO Kat Johns, who attended the launch event with Minister Rishworth. “Attending today’s event with the Minister was a significant moment. PWdWA fully supports the National Autism Strategy, and we are actively collaborating on initiatives that will reduce unemployment and other disparities faced by autistic people.”

Board Chair Shazzy Tharby emphasised the significance of this landmark initiative. “This is a pivotal moment in creating a more inclusive society where autistic individuals can access the support and services they need to thrive,” Tharby stated. “The strategy’s focus on key areas such as health, mental health, social inclusion, and employment aligns perfectly with PWdWA’s core values and our unwavering commitment to advocating for the rights of people with disabilities. We look forward to seeing these initiatives implemented and to continuing our work in ensuring that autistic individuals in Western Australia are empowered to live full and meaningful lives.”

Minister Rishworth, in her address, acknowledged the critical need to address the barriers faced by autistic people in areas like education and employment. She reaffirmed the Albanese Labor Government’s dedication to improving the lives of the nearly 300,000 autistic people living in Australia.

PWdWA is eager to work collaboratively with the government and other stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the National Autism Strategy and create a more inclusive and supportive society for all autistic individuals.
