Cancer Council Australia welcomes cancer control expert as new CEO
Cancer Council Australia’s new Chief Executive Officer, Professor Sanchia Aranda, has commenced her leadership position. She was formerly Director of Cancer Services and Information and Deputy CEO at the Cancer Institute NSW.
Professor Aranda has an impressive career spanning 36 years in cancer control, working as a clinician, researcher, educator and health administrator. She is President-elect of the Union for International Cancer Control, Geneva, as well as a Member of the Cancer Australia Advisory Council and Immediate Past President of the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care.
In 2013, she was awarded the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre Distinguished Fellow.
Cancer Council Australia’s Chair, Mr Stephen Foster, spoke of the organisation’s delight with the appointment.
“Professor Aranda’s wide-ranging experience means she understands the challenges and opportunities for the control of cancer and the differing perspectives of patients, their families, clinicians, researchers and health administrators,” he commented.
McVilly appointed to Professorial Fellowship in Disability and Social Inclusion
Professor Keith McVilly has been appointed to the Professorial Fellowship in Disability and Social Inclusion, in a partnership between disability services provider Scope and the University of Melbourne. The partnership has been designed to drive research benefitting people with a disability.
As part of his role, Professor McVilly will lead and direct Scope’s research agenda, oversee existing and new research programs, and continue to work with the disability sector more broadly.
“I have a particular interest in bridging the gap between research, policy and practice, especially as Australia embraces the roll-out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS),” he said.
Professor McVilly’s primary area of expertise is in intellectual and developmental disability, acquired brain injury, and forensic disability. He has built his expertise working as a direct support worker with people with disability, a clinician and service manager in public health services and in private practice, as well as in the university sector in Australia, the UK and USA.
