Leading affordable housing provider, City West Housing, is planning to add over 70 new apartments to its portfolio of affordable accommodation
available to those people on low incomes in Sydney.
City West’s new development at Wigram Road in Harold Park will comprise 76 studios, 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments; 13 of which will be adaptable
accommodation for elderly or disabled residents.
For the new development, the design and construction team at City West will explore ways tenants will benefit from the highest standards of
architecture and urban design and construct a building that encourages interaction between its residents and the surrounding community.
Janelle Goulding, CEO of City West Housing comments: “Homelessness in Australia is increasing at an exponential rate and the availability of affordable
housing is a huge issue in Sydney, which is only going to get worse. In fact, it’s one of the biggest issues facing Australians; with many people being
forced out of employment areas to live huge distances away from where they work. Just in the City of Sydney LGA in February 2015, the count of
people who were homeless was 847.
Ms Goulding continues: “Everyone should be able to afford to live in a home in order to keep them in employment. Over the last 20 years, City West
has built over 650 homes, providing affordable housing for over 1400 people. We believe that affordable housing should refer to rent and not low
cost or inferior quality accommodation and we plan to develop another 400 homes over the next three years.”
City West Housing is a not-for-profit organisation celebrating its 21st year in providing affordable housing to people on low to moderate incomes
living in the Ultimo, Pyrmont, Green Square and Eveleigh suburbs of Sydney.
The organisation was set up to keep social diversity in the inner city area; with many tenants being part of the essential services network for the
CBD/surrounding areas including local police officers, teachers, shift workers, child care and aged care workers.
City West recently opened an 88 unit development in North Eveleigh and plans to open a 104 unit development on the site of the old South Sydney Hospital
on Portman Street, Zetland in February 2016.
Design on the Harold Park project will commence later this year with construction anticipated to start in the second half of 2016.
