The Balwyn Evergreen Centre is celebrating International Volunteer Day on December 5 by recognising the commitment of dedicated individuals.
Volunteers like Lorraine Simpson and Lucy Cannon have become essential to the Centre’s vibrant community.
This global day of recognition highlights the impact volunteers have on communities, especially those who dedicate their time to support older Australians.
Lorraine, 85, who began volunteering at Balwyn Evergreen in 1999, brings warmth and enthusiasm to the Centre.
During that time, Lorraine has participated in a suite of volunteering roles, including coordinating events and singing in the choir where they perform at aged care facilities.
For Lorraine, volunteering has been as rewarding as it has been enlightening.
“I have lived alone for the last 20 years and I decided I would keep myself busy and to volunteer. I would be mixing with people and helping out at the same time.”
“I find it very rewarding and enjoy listening to the clients’ lives, stories and adventures. I don’t feel lonely as Evergreen as become my second home.”

Lucy Cannon, 40, a new addition to the Evergreen volunteer team, shares her journey of personal growth through service.
“I loved helping out with the recent high tea. It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves and the delicious food. For anyone thinking about volunteering, I’d say be open to giving your time, even if it’s just a couple of hours. You’ll gain confidence, skills and a sense of fulfilment from giving back to the community.”
According to Tina Hogarth-Clarke, CEO, Balwyn Evergreen Centre, the commitment of volunteers such as Lorraine and Lucy, enrich the lives of others, while developing their own skills and sense of purpose.
“Volunteers are the heart of our community. Their dedication fosters a supportive, inclusive environment where both the volunteers and those they support thrive. Each day, our volunteers make a genuine difference, reminding us all of the power of connection and care.”
