Albanese government invests $35.8M to expand housing in Victoria to unlock 3,149 new homes for development.

The Albanese Government is ramping up Victoria’s housing supply with a substantial $35.8 million investment aimed at unlocking up to 3,149 new homes across the state. This funding, part of the Government’s Housing Support Program, will focus on essential infrastructure that will enable rapid development in both regional and metropolitan areas.

Infrastructure Minister Catherine King highlighted the importance of these projects, stating, “A place to call home is not a luxury or a nice-to-have, but a fundamental need, and our Government is making this a reality for more Australians.”

The $35.8 million will be directed towards enabling infrastructure such as roads, water, and sewage, all vital components in accelerating the delivery of housing. The funding will also support access to social housing, increasing overall housing supply.

One notable project benefiting from the funding is the Johnsons Road Residential Development in Mernda. The Government is contributing $7.1 million to Whittlesea Council, which will enable the creation of 35 new housing lots. The project will involve upgrading road infrastructure, including the urbanisation of Johnsons Road, adding shared paths, public spaces, and preserving mature trees. Located at the end of the Mernda train line, this project is well-positioned near schools and existing services, making it a highly accessible development for local residents.

Other key projects receiving funding include:

  • $11.3 million for sewer pump station upgrades along the Calder Highway in Marong, which will enable over 2,300 new homes.
  • $7.9 million to unlock more than 600 new dwellings in Morwell, in the Latrobe Valley.
  • $7.3 million for infrastructure development in Ararat, including roads, drainage, and utilities for 90 new homes, with 70% allocated for social, community, and affordable housing.
  • $2 million for sub-dividing council-owned land in Beaufort to create an additional 35 housing sites.

These projects are part of the Albanese Government’s broader $32 billion Homes for Australia Plan, which aims to deliver 1.2 million new homes over the next five years.

Member for McEwen, Rob Mitchell, emphasised the need for such investments, saying, “For a decade, local infrastructure was ignored by successive Liberal governments, but we are investing in our local communities when they wouldn’t.” He added, “We can’t all rely on the bank of Mum and Dad. The Albanese Labor Government is making it easier for people to build or buy their own home in our community, which is important for families, and especially our kids.”

This announcement follows almost $250 million in previous investments in Victoria for enabling infrastructure and social housing, along with $6 million aimed at fast-tracking planning capabilities.

With these vital projects underway, the Albanese Government is moving closer to its ambitious target of delivering well-located, affordable homes for Australians in need.
