Running a not-for-profit (NFP) organisation comes with its own set of challenges, particularly when navigating the often complex world of tax and superannuation. To ease this burden, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) launched “Essentials for your small business” on 4 February 2025 – a free online learning platform designed to empower small businesses and NFPs with the knowledge they need to thrive. This invaluable resource offers flexible, accessible learning to help NFPs avoid common mistakes and confidently manage their financial responsibilities.

NFPs often face similar tax obligations to small businesses. The platform provides a tailored learning experience, enabling NFP staff and volunteers to gain a clear understanding of these obligations at their own pace and convenience.”

The platform boasts a range of engaging learning materials, including instructional videos, informative infographics, and tailored learning paths specific to the unique needs of NFPs. Users can easily select the courses most relevant to their organisation, ensuring an efficient and effective learning journey. Key features include the ability to download important information to personal devices, bookmark courses or specific content for easy sharing, and save progress to return to learning at any time.

“Essentials for your small business” covers a wide range of topics of particular relevance to NFPs, including record keeping, goods and services tax (GST), hiring workers, records reconstruction, and recording business income and expenses. With over 20 short courses available, the platform offers a comprehensive resource for NFPs of all sizes and structures.

The user-friendly design and accessible content of the platform make it an invaluable tool for any NFP seeking to strengthen its financial management. By investing time in learning through “Essentials for your small business,” NFPs can gain the confidence and knowledge needed to focus on their core mission and make a positive impact within their communities. The ATO encourages all NFPs to explore the platform and take advantage of this free resource. This platform will empower NFPs to manage their tax and super obligations effectively, freeing them to focus on the vital work they do. The platform’s accessibility and targeted content ensure that NFPs, regardless of size or resources, can benefit from this valuable learning opportunity.
