Philanthropy Australia congratulates Prime Minister Scott Morrison and the Liberal National Coalition on their success in the 2019 federal election.
The organisation especially welcomes the appointment of Hon Zed Seselja as Assistant Minister for Finance, Charities and Electoral Matters in the re-elected Morrison Coalition Government, and look forward to continuing to work with the government to strengthen Australia’s culture of giving.
Philanthropy Australia Chief Executive Officer, Sarah Davies, said it was a sign of the government’s commitment to the sector, and acknowledgement of the critical role it plays in Australia, that a dedicated Assistant Minister had been appointed to oversee the Charities portfolio.
“We welcome Senator Seselja’s appointment to the role and we look forward to continue working with him over the coming months as we advocate for a range of policy changes to grow the philanthropic sector in Australia,” Davies said.
Throughout the election campaign, Philanthropy Australia advocated to all sides of politics on the ‘Policy Priorities for a More Giving Australia’.
“Although we currently have a relatively good policy and regulatory framework for philanthropy in Australia, change is needed if we want to grow philanthropy further, promote a flourishing civil society and support a vibrant and inclusive community,” she said.
For Davies, the appointment of a dedicated Assistant Minister is a sign that the government is taking the charities sector seriously and appreciates its contribution to the economy.
The charitable sector is one of Australia’s largest sectors, with a total annual revenue of $146 billion.
