$40M boost to improve disability support in Australia, to build skills, fostering community engagement.
People with disabilities across Australia are set to receive a significant boost in support, with the government announcing $39.8 million in grants to 69 disability organisations. This funding will be used to expand vital peer support and capacity building programs over the next two years.
The initiative, announced by Minister for the NDIS, the Hon Bill Shorten, recognises the invaluable role peer support plays in empowering people with disabilities. “It is clear through the feedback we’ve received, including through the NDIS Review, that people with disability want to draw from the experiences of other people with disability,” Minister Shorten said.
“Peer support and self-advocacy organisations play a crucial role in enabling people with disabilities to build their skills, connect with others who understand their unique challenges, and ultimately live more independently,” he continued.
The grants will primarily benefit smaller, community-based organisations that provide vital support services. “These grants will assist many smaller organisations to continue to provide important peer-led and peer support to people with disability, enabling them to connect with capacity building support and other lifelong opportunities to build decision-making skills and experience,” Minister Shorten explained.
The funding will support a diverse range of programs, including local, state-based, and national initiatives, as well as online platforms. “The Peer Support and Capacity Building grant program injects funding into the community, so people with disability can continue to shape the future of how they are supported,” Minister Shorten added.
This initiative complements the Department of Social Services’ Information, Linkages and Capacity Building grants program, further strengthening support networks for people with disabilities and their families.
A full list of grant recipients can be found on the NDIS website and GrantConnect as agreements are finalised.
