Fighting domestic violence: NSW funds prevention programs

Fighting domestic violence

NSW grants $4.25M to community groups for programs preventing domestic violence. Funding support fosters inclusive communities.

The NSW Government has announced a significant investment in the prevention of domestic and family violence, launching a grant program to support community-led initiatives across the state. Up to $4.25 million will be awarded to local organisations to develop and implement programs that address the underlying causes of this critical issue.

“Violence against women and girls is preventable,” stated Jodie Harrison, Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. “Our government’s first dedicated primary prevention strategy provides a roadmap for tackling the root causes of this violence and stopping it before it even begins.”

The grant program prioritises projects that align with the Pathways to Prevention strategy, focusing on high-impact settings such as schools, workplaces, and sporting clubs. Initiatives that actively engage men and boys in prevention efforts are particularly encouraged, along with programs that support LGBTQIA+ communities, migrant, and refugee communities, and explore innovative approaches, including the use of digital platforms.

“We are committed to partnering with local organisations and the community to develop and implement programs that challenge harmful attitudes and promote healthy and respectful relationships,” Minister Harrison emphasised. “By working together, we can create a society where violence against women and girls is no longer tolerated.”

Successful projects will receive funding for three years and must demonstrate a clear understanding of how their initiatives will contribute to a safer and more equitable future for all. The full grant application process will commence in early 2025.

This initiative is part of the NSW Government’s broader commitment to invest $38 million over four years in its primary prevention strategy. By empowering communities to take action, the government aims to create lasting change and build a future free from domestic and family violence.
