The Benevolent Society launches In Sync programme, helping children with disabilities thrive through play
The Benevolent Society, a leading social services provider in Australia, has launched a new initiative called In Sync. This innovative programme aims to support children with disabilities and their families in New South Wales and South Australia. In Sync takes a unique approach, focusing on strengthening the bond between parents/carers and their children to unlock a child’s full potential.
Building on the Power of Play
In Sync’s core strength lies in its play-based approach. “Our Early Supports programme highlighted that therapies are more effective when backed by a strong parent-child relationship,” says Jeremy Halcrow, Benevolent’s Executive Director for Disability, Ageing, Carers & Business Development. Over a 3-6 month period, practitioners equip parents with practical strategies and techniques that seamlessly integrate into daily routines. These play-based sessions address specific needs, whether it’s building vocabulary, managing challenging behaviour, or achieving developmental milestones.
Science Behind the Fun
In Sync’s approach is rooted in research conducted by Benevolent’s own specialists. “Children learn and flourish best within their natural environments, and play-based activities with parents are highly effective,” explains Dr. Jacqui Barfoot, Consultant Occupational Therapist. “This strengthens parent-child interactions, creating a platform for development and making it easier to try other support methods.”
Real Progress, Real Stories
The programme is already delivering positive results. Six-year-old Quinn from Adelaide is showing significant improvement in interacting with peers and family thanks to In Sync. Eden Diggle, Benevolent’s Project Implementation Lead, emphasises, “We empower parents to become agents of change. This not only helps children reach their developmental goals but also equips families to provide ongoing support in real-life settings.”
In Sync: Tailored Support for Youngsters
The programme is designed for children aged 0-7 with a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Plan under Developmental Delay. However, Benevolent encourages anyone seeking support to get in touch. Sessions are offered for 3-6 months, with additional support options explored if needed.
Helping Families Thrive Across Australia
Currently, In Sync is available in South Australia (Melrose Park, Elizabeth Vale, Port Pirie) and New South Wales (Tamworth and Illawarra region), with plans for expansion. For more information, visit benevolent.org.au, call 1800 236 762, or fill out a referral form.
The Benevolent Society: A Legacy of Care
Founded in 1813, The Benevolent Society has a long history of supporting vulnerable Australians. With over 1,000 dedicated practitioners, they empower individuals to live life on their own terms. In Sync is another example of their commitment to creating a more just and caring society.
