Australia’s first giving platform, GiveNow, has been appointed a regional leader of the global #GivingTuesday movement.
The announcement comes days before GiveNow hits a $100 million milestone, having been used by over 4,000 Australian charities and not-for-profits. The platform will now promote #GivingTuesday across Australia and New Zealand.
Executive Director of GiveNow, Cathy Truong, said: “Australia is ready to be part of a global giving campaign that’s a powerful alternative to the pre-Christmas and end-of-year holiday spending spree.”
The fundraising service was selected due to its community credentials, its grassroots fundraising expertise, data science skills and practice in creating social movements.
GiveNow was formed in 2001 by Our Community and has gained trust from thousands of community organisations and donors.

“We’re proud to be the platform that’s been so reliable for small and large organisations alike, meeting our goal to ‘democratise giving’ and channel money to so many communities,” Truong said. “#GivingTuesday pitches itself as an open, grassroots, giving movement, which fits perfectly with our values and model.”
The #GivingTuesday movement has rapidly grown via social media. It was created as an antidote to the shopping frenzy that follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales and now has a dedicated following. In 2019, it will take place on December 3.
The appointment gives GiveNow the chance to help local causes join the fundraising opportunity that raised $380 million in the US last year. The event involves 50 countries worldwide and will now become more prominent in Australia and New Zealand.
GiveNow has begun mapping out plans to get more Australians and New Zealanders involved in #GivingTuesday and will join a global gathering of #GivingTuesday leaders in Italy next month.
“The fact that we’ve been chosen as a major partner is great recognition of Our Community’s model as a social enterprise and certified B-Corporation and our work over two decades to provide practical technology and education that’s tailor-made for the community sector.”
