The Australian Government has announced an investment of over $47 million in Far North Queensland to boost social housing.
The funding package includes almost $25 million through the Housing Support Program, which will directly support the construction of new social housing by funding essential infrastructure such as roads, drainage, and utilities. This crucial investment will facilitate the development of five key housing projects across the region, including:
- Pormpuraaw: $6.5 million for the creation of two new residential expansion areas.
- Napranum: $1.6 million to increase housing density by converting 14 lots into 34.
- Seisia: $9.9 million to deliver 32 fully serviced lots in this remote Indigenous community.
- Bamaga: $5.1 million to support a 20-lot social housing development.
- New Mapoon: $1.8 million to improve access and provide essential infrastructure to the existing social housing development.
“My Government is building Australia’s future,” declared Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. “Today’s announcement of more than $50 million for infrastructure projects across Far North Queensland demonstrates our commitment to improving the lives of our citizens. These projects will not only increase the availability of social housing for Cairns locals but also enhance community facilities, bringing people together.”
In addition to the Housing Support Program, a further $22.5 million has been allocated through the Growing Regions Program. This program provides funding to local governments and not-for-profit organisations for critical community infrastructure projects. Seven successful projects were selected through a competitive process:
- Cairns Community & Multicultural Centre: $4 million
- PCYC Cairns: $2 million
- Redlynch Community Sporting Precinct: $5 million
- Olkola People Cultural Knowledge Centre (Stage 2): $2.65 million
- Mapoon Streetscape Beautification: $1.96 million
- Wujal Wujal Council Administration & Community Hub: $7.49 million
- Hope Vale Digital Services Centre: $1.84 million
“From Pormpuraaw to Cairns, we are investing in the infrastructure that our communities deserve,” said Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King. “Whether it’s cultural centres, sports facilities, or town centres, we are committed to making our regions even better places to live, work, and play.”
Senator for Queensland, Nita Green, expressed her pride in the Government’s commitment to the region. “This investment demonstrates our Government is listening to the needs of Far North Queensland and delivering on its promises.”
These significant investments will not only address the critical need for social housing but also enhance the quality of life for residents across the region by providing access to vital community facilities and infrastructure.
