‘Helping People Achieve’ first charity to win Telstra Business Award

Darwin charity Helping People Achieve (HPA) is the first NFP to win a Telstra Business award.

HPA offers employment and accommodation options to Territorians living with disabilities.

The organisation was recognised as the overall 2016 Telstra Northern Territory Business of the Year and winner of the inaugural Charity Award category.

New in 2016, the Charity Award is designed to recognise the significant contribution of NFP organisations to not only Australian communities but to the economy as well.

Tony Burns CEO of HPA said that the organisation’s work is all about developing skills to empower clients to participate in the community.

Burns told Third Sector that winning the award is a game changer and the organisation is excited about the new opportunities that will stem from this.

“We are inspiring and empowering people with disabilities to lead fulfilling lives. Our employees and clients are developing confidence, independence as well as work and life skills enabling them to live an everyday life in a world where there are no barriers,” Burns said.

Andy Ellis Telstra Business Awards Ambassador said the winners of the 2016 Telstra Northern Territory Business Awards demonstrate innovation, competitiveness and strong financial performance.

“We were impressed with HPA. Mr Burns is a highly inspirational CEO. His methods are collaborative and encouraging and he is working hard to drive the new strategic direction to help remove the stigma attached to disabilities,” said Ellis.

NFP organisation Dress for Success Sydney (DfSS) has been named a finalist in the NSW Telstra Business Awards.

Dress for Success Sydney’s CEO Ursula McGeown said being named a finalist was an honour and testament to the hard work of the charity’s staff, corporate partners and volunteer network.

“Removing the barriers to employment is a key priority for us. Our aim is to empower women to achieve economic independence so they can realise their full potential, support themselves and their families, and make positive contributions to their communities,” said McGeown.

“Powered by volunteers, we receive more than 16,000 volunteer hours every year. Our volunteer network is made up of hundreds of women and men who are passionate about using their skills, talents and time to give back to those who need it most.”
