A record $36.4 million has been donated to Western Australia’s 50th annual Telethon for sick children, including $3.3 million from the federal government.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull appeared during the 26-hour appeal, which broke last year’s record by almost $10 million, with mining giant BHP making the largest donation of $4 million and the WA government pitching in $3 million.

Since 1968, more than $231 million has been raised for the Telethon Kids Institute and Princess Margaret Hospital to assist in research and equipment to treat children with life-threatening diseases across WA.
