As part of its work supporting thousands of people with complex intellectual, physical and multiple disabilities, Scope supports research conducted by people with disability for people with disability via grants.

Through Scope’s Dr Jennifer Fitzgerald Research Grant, up to $30,000 in grants is available to support researchers with disability in carrying out projects that aim to improve the lives of people with disability.

Scope has announced that applications for the 2025 grant are now open to early-career researchers who completed their PhD up to five years ago (excluding career disruptions) and are employed at an Australian university or other settings, such as a community service organisation. The grant is for a one- to two-year research project that aligns with Scope’s research priority areas.

Associate Professor Stella Koritsas, Scope Head of Research, said the grant is an important part of the organisation’s commitment to ensuring research is led by people with disability.

“At Scope, we believe that research should be guided by the voices, experiences, and leadership of the communities it seeks to serve,” Koritsas said. “This grant is an opportunity to support researchers with disability and foster equity.”

The grant is in recognition of Dr Jennifer Fitzgerald AM, who served as Scope’s Chief Executive Officer from 2012 until 2022 and is a champion for people with disability and their families. It was established to recognise her significant contribution to Scope and the disability sector as well as her ongoing commitment to research and evidence-based practice.

Grantees can use the funds to support a new or existing project where there is a funding gap. Applications close on 6 June.
