The commission has been asked to adopt a broad definition of the sector encompassing charities, churches, sporting, cultural, community, indigenous and environmental organisations as well as Australian based international aid and development agencies, industry and professional bodies, welfare, health and educational service providers and advocacy bodies.
“Not-for-profit or non-profit organisations are critical to building a fairer and stronger Australia, and enhancing the economic, social, cultural and environmental well-being of society,” said Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Julia Gillard. “The study will be important in informing the delivery and advancement of the Rudd Government’s Social Inclusion Agenda.”
Assistant Treasurer the Hon Chris Bowen said “Any policy reform in this area will be aimed at strengthening the community sector’s capacity to deliver services in response to community needs.”
