PetRescue appoints James Lolicato as new COO

charity appointment

James Lolicato’s appointment marks a pivotal step in the evolution of pet adoption charity PetRescue towards prevention-focused initiatives that support both people and their pets.

With over a decade of leadership experience in the not-for-profit, social services and mental health sectors, Lolicato brings deep expertise in building innovative, human-centred programs that deliver lasting impact. His career includes serving as COO at The Man Cave, a mental health charity for teenage boys, and as CEO of Pride Cup Australia, where he helped transform inclusion and wellbeing across the sporting landscape.

Recognised as an Australian Community Leader of the Year and a LinkedIn Top Voice, Lolicato has consistently championed prevention-led approaches that strengthen communities.

Uniting with Patima Tantiprasut, PetRescue CEO & Managing Director, Lolicato will bolster the evolution of a more holistic approach to pet welfare and rehoming, one that recognises the deep connection between the wellbeing of people and their pets. His appointment comes at a critical time, as the sector faces increasing pressure from rising pet rehoming – driven by the cost of living crisis, domestic circumstances and housing instability.

“We’re seeing a widening gap between mental health and social support systems, and the rescue sector is feeling the impact,” Lolicato said. “Every day, we hear stories from people in crisis, people who love their pets deeply but are being forced to make heartbreaking decisions to rehome or surrender them. There’s often stigma or shame attached to that, and with PetRescue’s deep belief that it shouldn’t be that way, I look forward to helping to strengthen the change in the narrative.”

PetRescue’s mission has long extended beyond pet adoption. Through programs like Safe & Sound Pets and initiatives that support rescue organisations on the ground, including over $14 million of donated food and products, the team is working to address the root causes that lead to pets being listed for adoption on PetRescue’s website.

“To truly make a meaningful difference to vulnerable pets in Australia, we know that deep, transformative work is needed to create real and long-lasting change. James brings a depth of experience in prevention initiatives and NFP operations to the PetRescue team to further achieve this vision,” Tantiprasut said. “Despite the care, compassion and tireless efforts dedicated to pets in need by the whole rescue community, combined with the millions of incredible humans helping to foster and adopt homeless pets, the reality is we can’t adopt our way out of the real issues and the core problems that continue to negatively impact pets and the people who care for them in Australia.”

As the rescue landscape continues to evolve, PetRescue remains committed to ensuring that every pet is safe, supported and connected to a family who loves them. That means supporting the people who care for them. Visit PetRescue’s website for more information on its work and how you can support.
