Gov announces $10 million for specialist disability housing

Minister for Social Services, Christian Porter said the grants round is now open for community organisations to apply to complete housing projects outside NDIS trial sites.

“Not-for-profits (NFPs) fulfil a vital role in society and community need for specialist disability accommodation is no exception,” said Porter.

“While housing is a State and Territory responsibility, this funding is designed to help complete, modify or fit-out projects that would otherwise be delayed, or not delivered.

“Applicants should be incorporated, NFP organisations that are supported by their local community. Where appropriate these organisations are encouraged to partner with for-profits, such as banks or builders, to ensure delivery of the projects.

“Accommodation will need to cater for people who are expected to be eligible for the NDIS into the future. Projects should have a particular focus on people currently housed in inappropriate accommodation and those with ageing carers who need a long-term, sustainable arrangement.

“All projects should be completed within two years to help address short-term community need while the NDIS transition gets under way.”

Applications must be received by 11 February 2016 and successful projects will be announced in the first half of 2016.
