A new partnership launching this month aims to bridge the gap between private health care and humanitarian aid, with the Vision for Life Institute (VFLI) pledging to donate $100 to The Fred Hollows Foundation for every surgery it performs over the next three years.

The collaboration, dubbed the ‘Eye for an Eye’ initiative, is designed to drive positive eye health care across more than 25 countries in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific.

Starting in January 2026, the funding model links domestic medical procedures directly to global development. The contributions will be used to deliver life-changing surgeries and treatments abroad, while also funding the training required to strengthen local health systems for the long term.

Ross Piper, CEO of The Fred Hollows Foundation, said the deal represents a significant step toward global equity in health.

“The partnership between The Fred Hollows Foundation and Vision for Life Institute is grounded in a shared belief that everyone, no matter where they live, should have access to quality eye health care,” Piper said.

“This initiative reflects Professor Fred Hollows’ belief that everyone everywhere deserves the right to sight. Vision for Life’s generosity will help us restore sight, train more doctors, and strengthen health systems so that communities can care for their own eye health.”

The partnership is being positioned as a model for how the private health sector can play a more active role in closing the global eye health gap. By tying revenue directly to charitable impact, the organisations aim to demonstrate how purpose-driven businesses can amplify the reach of aid agencies.

Piper expressed hope that the ‘Eye for an Eye’ concept would set a precedent for the broader industry.

“We both hope that this initiative will inspire other like-minded organisations to join the movement to end avoidable blindness worldwide. For every surgery performed at Vision for Life Institute, a brighter future becomes possible for someone in need,” Piper said.
