Community sleep-out raises record-breaking funds for homelessness

Link Wentworth’s community sleep-out event in Western Sydney has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to help Australians facing homelessness.

More than 100 people braved the cold for an overnight stay in swags, sleeping bags and makeshift bedding at Penrith’s Sydney International Regatta Centre on 5 September during the Home Sweet event, hosted by not-for-profit community housing provider Link Wentworth.

Link Wentworth CEO Andrew McAnulty said they were able to raise $303,900, their highest total to date, nearly doubling the last Home Sweet event held two years ago.

“The fact that we have already exceeded our goal shows just how committed the community is to tackling homelessness,” McAnulty said. “We know homelessness rates in Australia are critical as we face both a cost-of-living and housing shortage crisis. These funds will make a real difference to people who are doing it tough – from young people with nowhere safe to turn, to women escaping domestic and family violence.”

Proceeds will go directly to supporting Women’s Community Shelters (WCS), Platform Youth Services and Link Wentworth’s scholarship program, providing critical assistance to women, young people and families facing, or at risk of experiencing, homelessness.

This year marked the first time the Home Sweet event was held in Western Sydney, a region where Link Wentworth manages more than 3,000 social and affordable homes.

Since its launch in 2017, Home Sweet has grown to become one of Sydney’s most impactful homelessness fundraisers.

“This year’s record-breaking event will ensure more people have access to shelter, support and pathways out of homelessness,” McAnulty said. “Every dollar raised is a step toward changing someone’s future. We are so grateful to everyone who took part, donated and supported Home Sweet 2025.”

Donations remain open until the end of September. To donate, visit the Home Sweet 2025 website.
