Charlie Teo bares all for Cure Brain Cancer Foundation

Staff of prominent neurosurgeon Charlie Teo were initially reluctant when he suggested last year that they get naked in front of their boss.

As Professor Teo recalls, he got “a universal no”.

But after he talked them into the unusual team-building exercise, they’re now apparently enthusiastic to do it again when the Sydney Skinny returns to Cobblers Beach at Middle Head on Sydney Harbour on Sunday, March 19.

“If you want a community to get together and sort of all be on the same page, you can’t pick a better event than being naked together,” Prof Teo said.

“Being nude in front of other people is a great equaliser.”

Teo is trying to convince as many people as possible to get involved in the “exhilarating” nude swim event, which will raise funds for his Cure Brain Cancer Foundation.

Just as importantly, he hopes the event will increase awareness of brain cancer, which the foundation says kills more children than any other disease in Australia.

“Every time one of our patients dies my secretary puts a chart on my desk so I know who’s died, and every day there’s two kids’ charts on that desk,”  Teo said.

“I’ve got to call the parents and say, ‘I’m just so sorry’.

“So I get this grim reminder every day of the impact this cancer has on society and on families.”

However,  Teo stressed that rather than just donating money, people should get their kit off and join him on the beach in March.

“It’s not really about the swimming, it’s not about the competition, it’s about fun and enjoying a community event,” he said.

Entries are open now for the event’s 900m and 300m swim courses, which are both untimed and suitable for people of all swimming abilities.
