Charity founder’s case adjourned

A charity founder charged with fraud will return to court next month.

Jean Madden, who has been charged in relation to the Street Swags organisation she established, is facing one count of fraud for “dishonestly causing detriment”.

She was not required to appear when her case was mentioned in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.

The Crown sought a longer than usual amount of time to prepare the full brief of evidence to allow for “a forensic accounting report” to be created.

Madden’s lawyer, Kris Jahnke, queried why a report of that kind was necessary and said there was “some public interest” in moving the matter forward efficiently.

“It is alleged my client denied access to bank accounts to the complainant who was involved in a charity,” he said.

“That allegation is strongly denied.”

He said the matter needed to be progressed and a general time limit was all that was needed to prepare the brief.

Magistrate Bronwyn Springer agreed and ordered the brief be delivered by October 10, with the matter to return to court on October 24.

Madden was the Queensland Young Australian of the Year in 2010. She founded Street Swags in 2010 to provide the homeless with canvas bags that convert to bedding.
