Best practice tips for conference networking

1. Have a plan

Make a note of sessions you want to attend and research particular speakers and exhibitors you want to meet. This will ensure you have plenty to talk about when the appropriate opportunity arises to introduce yourself.

2. Network during the conference sessions

Conference sessions are a great way to meet like-minded people, as those that are attending the same sessions as you are likely to be interested in similar topics. Strike up a conversation and exchange business cards with the person sitting next to you while you are waiting for the session
to start.

Move to a different seat during session breaks so you can sit next to and meet someone new. In addition to asking questions to conference speakers in the designated discussion time, also consider introducing yourself to the conference speakers afterwards to connect with key not-for-profit leaders and experts.

3. Use your breaks wisely

Don’t just use the breaks to grab some food and a drink – make sure you also use this time to circulate the exhibition area if there is one and chat to industry specialists in addition to other delegates and speakers.

4. Attend the social functions

Social functions provide a more relaxed setting to catch-up with old friends and make valuable new connections. Delegates attending Third Sector Expo 2013 should make sure they register and attend the free cocktail party, which will take place at 4 pm on Monday 15 April 2013.

5. Get in touch after the conference

Touch base with new connections through LinkedIn or by sending a brief email. Make sure you follow through on any actions you discussed with them at the conference.
