A new report offers hope and warning for Australia’s social cohesion. While inclusivity is on the rise other challenges persist.
A recent report by the Scanlon Research Foundation has provided a mixed bag of news for Australia’s social cohesion. While the nation continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to multiculturalism and inclusivity, emerging challenges, such as rising inequality and growing division, threaten to erode these positive trends. Cath Scarth, CEO of AMES Australia dissects and chimes in on the report.
Key Findings from the Report:
- Strong Support for Multiculturalism: A significant majority of Australians (85%) continue to view multiculturalism as beneficial to the nation.
- Sense of Belonging: Over 70% of Australians feel a sense of belonging in the country.
- Positive Attitudes Toward Immigration: While opinions on immigration levels are divided, a majority (75%) reject discrimination based on race or faith.
- Growing Concerns About Inequality: A rising number of Australians (41%) are struggling financially, and trust in government is waning.
- Challenges in Intercultural Relations: While overall intercultural relations are strong, a significant number of people from non-English speaking backgrounds have experienced discrimination.
The Importance of Social Cohesion
Cath Scarth, CEO of AMES Australia, emphasised the importance of social cohesion in addressing these challenges. She noted that:
“Social cohesion can be an antidote or balsam to negative or damaging pressures emerging in society. It can help to prevent deeper division in society while also supporting personal wellbeing and social connections.”
To maintain high levels of social cohesion, it is essential to address inequality, promote fairness, and foster understanding between different cultural groups.
A Call to Action
The report serves as a reminder that Australia’s social cohesion is not guaranteed. As Scarth noted:
“The lessons from all of this are simple. Social cohesion can be an antidote or balsam to negative or damaging pressures emerging in society. It can help to prevent deeper division in society while also supporting personal wellbeing and social connections.”
By embracing diversity, promoting inclusivity, and addressing the root causes of social division, Australia can continue to be a beacon of hope in a world increasingly marked by polarisation and conflict.
