Do you have any tips for NFPs setting an IT strategy on a limited budget?
When working on a limited budget:
- Focus on your organisation’s requirements, prioritise them and then identify the IT features that meet these objectives
- Plan ahead – establish a three or five year plan and identify strategies to maximise the value for your capital expenditure and operating expenses
- Choose reputable equipment – it may cost a bit more initially but it will generally save you money in the long run
- Ask for recommendations from people who have experience working in an environment similar to yours
- If IT is critical to your operation, make sure you have quality support and if possible implement a managed plan arrangement where your IT support cost is fixed. This will reduce your exposure to IT risks such as a major server failure.
What are some useful IT tools for NFP organisations?
Most organisations will need a financial system, CRM system, donations/fundraising or case management system.
Make sure you have registered for the Donortec program which provides donated and discounted technology products from companies such as Microsoft, Cisco, Symantec, Sophos and Kaspersky.
What should NFP organisations ask software suppliers before they purchase a product?
Ask software suppliers to provide references and insist on talking to organisations that are using their products. Be very clear on what the ongoing maintenance cost is and if any future upgrade costs are required. Ideally, it is preferred to choose a vendor with local support.
With technology and products always advancing, how do NFP organisations keep their IT strategy up to date?
Technology and IT products are definitely evolving at a rapid rate. The best advice is to find a reputable and trusted IT service provider that takes on a personal and tailored approach to your organisation. Ask if your provider includes IT strategy consultation within your current IT support plan.
