Use your not-for-profit’s anniversary as a marketing tool

For a not-for-profit, an anniversary is a time to look back and reflect on the organisation's journey and celebrate its milestones. Recognising this, the Australasian Society for Trenchless Technology created a book to use in their 20th anniversary celebrations and assist with their marketing initiatives.

The Australasian Society for Trenchless Technology (ASTT) is a not-for-profit member-based organisation that promotes non-disruptive construction techniques used for the installation and repair of underground infrastructure.

As an organisation with a successful history, the ASTT had the opportunity to tell its story to its members, potential members and other key stakeholders in the industry, such as government. By doing so, they could demonstrate their many years of industry experience and expertise and reinforce their credibility in the industry.

There was also the opportunity to celebrate the past, look forward to the future and recognise those that contributed to the industry.

Opportunity

From its humble beginnings in 1991, the Society has evolved into an effective and relevant organisation that regularly communicates the message of their members and the industry to government, stakeholders, asset owners and the public.

The Society has benefited from the assistance of a number of people and industry innovations. The ASTT wanted to highlight these people and bring the organisation and the industry’s history to life, as well as reinforce its image and reputation, and an anniversary book was an opportunity to do so.

Furthermore, the ASTT wanted a document to record the key events and milestones in the 20 years since the association was formed. Being an historical record, it was decided that a book provided the best way to do this.

Goals

The ASTT had three specific goals:

1. Celebrate its history and recognise individuals that contributed to its success

2. Record key events and milestones

3. Enhance the ASTT’s identity

Solution

The ASTT worked with Great Southern Press, of which Third Sector Services is a division, to create a book filled with the innovations and people that made the ASTT and its industry what it is today.

The book proved to be a strong marketing tool which brought the organisation to life and established the industry’s credibility and experience throughout history.

Results

The result was an A4 coffee table book full of pictures and captions, taking readers on a journey over the decades. It was distributed to the ASTT’s members and a selection of organisations involved with the industry. The feedback from members and those that received the book was overwhelmingly positive, being impressed with not only the depth of historical information detailed in the book but also with the quality and professionalism of the publication.

ASTT Chairman Trevor Gosatti said “The ASTT is thrilled with the 20th anniversary book prepared by Great Southern Press. We now have an historical record of the 20 years since the ASTT’s inception, which is highly valued by our members.

“We were very impressed by Great Southern Press throughout the entire production process, and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend their services to anyone else.”

“This is a book that will make our members very proud of the ASTT and the industry.”

LET YOUR ORGANISATION BENEFIT FROM ITS OWN BOOK

If you’re thinking about producing a custom book to celebrate your organisation’s anniversary (or for any other reason) we recommend considering the following:

1. What do you want the focus of the book to be?

2. What type of content will be included in the book?

3. How will you gather the information and images needed?

4. Who will research, write, edit, design and print the book?

5. What is your budget?
