BEING appoints new CEO, Giancarlo de Vera, to champion mental health consumer rights and drive systemic change in NSW.

BEING – Mental Health Consumers, the peak advocacy body for mental health consumers in New South Wales, has appointed Giancarlo de Vera as its new Chief Executive Officer. De Vera, a seasoned advocate with lived experience of psychosocial disability, will assume the role on December 9, 2024.

De Vera brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to social justice to the role. With a strong background in community services, government, and the not-for-profit sector, both domestically and internationally, they have a proven track record of advocating for the rights of marginalised groups. Most recently, de Vera served as Senior Manager of Policy at People with Disability Australia, where they played a pivotal role in shaping disability policy and advocating for systemic change.

As a proud member of the LGBTIQA+ community and a non-binary individual from a culturally and racially marginalised background, de Vera personally understands the unique challenges faced by many mental health consumers. This lived experience, coupled with their professional expertise, positions them to effectively represent the diverse needs and perspectives of the NSW mental health community.

De Vera’s appointment marks a significant step forward in ensuring that the voices of marginalised groups within the mental health community are heard and amplified. Their leadership will be instrumental in driving systemic change and improving the lives of mental health consumers across New South Wales.

De Vera has been recognised for their significant contributions to the social sector. They were named one of Australia’s 40 Under 40 most influential Asian Australians and one of Pro Bono Australia’s Impact 25 most influential Australians in the social services sector.

“I am deeply honored and excited to join BEING as its new CEO,” de Vera said. “With lived experience of psychosocial disability, I am passionate about elevating the voices of mental health consumers. I’m committed to continuing BEING’s incredible legacy of centering lived experience to drive systemic change.”

De Vera succeeds Priscilla Brice, who has recently taken on the role of CEO at the National Mental Health Consumer Alliance.

BEING’s board and staff extend their warmest welcome to Giancarlo de Vera and look forward to working together to advance the rights and well-being of mental health consumers in NSW.
