Tasmanian NFP online scam alert

The Tasmanian Police have issued a warning about online scams which have seen many not-for-profits lose substantial sums of money.

The Tasmanian Police said sophisticated technology based crimes are becoming more common .

The scams range from an ‘impostor boss email’ in which an organisation’s finance department receives emails which appears to be from their boss, through to bank accounts being compromised.

Police warn that scammers are using advanced technology, with activities and emails appearing legitimate.

“In the last two weeks, several actual and attempted losses to business have occurred,” said the Tasmanian Police.

“Reports have been received from quite big businesses down to voluntary children sports groups.

“Always check any request for an unexpected payment verbally with your ‘boss’ before you prepare a payment.”

ACNC Assistant Commissioner David Locke said charities should be extra vigilant in light of the Tasmanian Police warning.

“Charities should be on the lookout for any unusual activities or request for funds,” Locke said.

“Good governance can go a long way in protecting your charity from being scammed.

“By having the right checks and balances in place, it can reduce your charity’s risk of being scammed and catch any issues that do arise quickly.”
