The affordable housing development is a partnership between Link Wentworth and Landcom and forms part of the latter’s broader master-planned community in Schofields.
The fast-tracked approval of the development at 108 Burdekin Road in Schofields marks a major development in the delivery of much-needed affordable housing in Western Sydney.
It is one of 14 approved housing projects being funded through the second round of the Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF), which is set to deliver an extra 2,000 much-needed homes across New South Wales.
Link Wentworth CEO Andrew McAnulty said the Schofields development alone will deliver 63 high-quality, 100% affordable housing apartments.
“The development will feature a mix of one, two and three-bedroom homes, designed to support individuals and families on very low to moderate incomes,” McAnulty said. “Welcoming safe public spaces and common areas, including a community room, will support social interactions and foster a sense of community and belonging among residents. Solar panels and water-efficient fixtures will help keep living costs low for tenants.”
McAnulty emphasised that it is in a prime location.
“The six-storey building is well-positioned, offering excellent access to transport, education and employment hubs, ensuring residents can stay connected to the opportunities and services they need,” he said.
The project was granted planning approval this month under the NSW Government’s State Significant Development (SSD) pathway, just six months after being submitted.
“This swift approval recognises the project’s alignment with the government’s housing priorities and recognises the potential of community housing projects in addressing the housing crisis and delivering real community benefit,” McAnulty said. “By utilising the 30% height and floor space ratio (FSR) bonus, the project has been able to maximise the number of affordable homes delivered on the site, ensuring the best use of planning incentives to offer more affordable housing stock and tackle the housing crisis.”
Link Wentworth will build and manage the homes, with construction due to start by June 2026 and keys in the door by 2028.
According to McAnulty, it is a testament to what can be achieved when all levels of government, the private sector and community housing providers work in partnership to deliver projects that provide real housing solutions for people who need it most.
