Lady Somers Camp program Celebrates 30 Years

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Lady Somers Camp, and we’ll be celebrating the enormous impact this program has had on so many lives with a special event held at the organisation’s headquarters at Albert Park.

Lady Somers Camp is designed to challenge the perceptions that young people hold about themselves and others. Through introducing 100 participants each year to a broad range of peers, the program helps dismantle social barriers and increase understanding and acceptance of diversity.

Throughout the challenging week, participants work together to compete as a team, push their boundaries and develop friendships. Participants leave with a greater understanding of their own and others’ potential, and gain new insight into how they can make a positive impact on their communities.

Malvern Resident Jean Bowes, 65, who was a leader at the first camp in 1986 has seen how the program has developed over the years.

“I have had an amazing 30 year involvement during which I have made lifelong friends that I can rely on and call upon at any time.” Jean says. “I remain in close contact with many girls who were participants in those early years of running the camps. It has been wonderful to have these intergenerational friendships, watching these young women grow and attending 18th and 21st birthday parties, followed by engagements and weddings. This is a very supportive community where people are always willing to celebrate with you, and support each other through difficult times of illness or loss. I believe this is how our organisation makes a difference through service to each other and the community.”

Murrumbeena resident Jane Harrison, 44, was a participant in the program at one of the first camps, and has continued to be involved over the years. “I know whenever I need something there are many I can call on for support, whether that is emotional or physical support. Where would I be without Lady Somers Camp? I don’t know, but I cannot imagine my life would have been filled with as much joy and laughter, amazing experiences and such love if I had chosen not to attend 29 years ago.”
