A better relationship between government and philanthropy

The aim of the discussions is to develop a better relationship between government and philanthropy, and to help philanthropists understand the government workings around budget strategies and policy frameworks, according to Director of the Office for the Community Sector Lynne Wannan.

Wannan says the initial discussions have focussed on how governments make decisions and how new initiatives are turned into policy with input from the Departments of Treasury and Finance, Premier and Cabinet, Education and Early Childhood Development and Human Services.

The incentive for the discussions resulted from the devastating events of the Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria in January 2009.

Meanwhile, Social Ventures Australia (SVA) has launched a Private Ancillary Fund (PAF) service. With the support of some of Australia’s most well known philanthropists, SVA aims to increase the profile of philanthropy and increase Australia’s giving levels.
