Major education reform gives student debt relief and free TAFE

The Albanese Government provides relief to millions of Australians by wiping billions of dollars of student debt.
A landmark moment in Australian education has arrived. Federal Education Minister Jason Clare has unveiled significant reforms to the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) and vocational education and training (VET). These changes aim to alleviate the financial burden on students, making education more accessible and affordable for all.
Student debt relief: A lifeline for millions
Key reforms to HELP include:
- A 20% cut to student loans: This substantial reduction in outstanding HELP debt will directly benefit approximately three million Australians, easing their financial strain and allowing them to focus on their future.
- Lower repayment thresholds: Individuals will need to earn a higher income before they are required to start repaying their student loans. This change will provide a much-needed financial buffer, allowing graduates to establish their careers and build financial stability.
- Reduced repayment rates: Lower annual repayments for those with student debt will ease the financial burden, enabling students to better manage their finances and prioritise their well-being.
Minister Clare emphasised the significance of these reforms, stating, “For someone with the average HELP debt of $27,600, around $5,520 will be wiped from their outstanding HELP loans next year. We will also reduce the amount Australians with student debts have to repay per year and raise the threshold of when they need to start repaying it.”
Fee-free TAFE: Empowering the future workforce
The Government’s commitment to vocational education is evident in the introduction of Fee-Free TAFE. From 2027, 100,000 TAFE places will be funded annually, with zero fees for students. This initiative aims to address critical skills shortages, support emerging industries, and provide Australians with the opportunity to upskill or retrain.
Minister Clare highlighted the transformative power of education, stating, “Education can never be taken away from you. It can take a person from disadvantage to advantage in a way nothing else in society can do.”
