Proximity achieves carbon neutrality, sets new pro bono benchmark

According to its inaugural Impact Report released recently, Proximity has achieved carbon neutrality while delivering its highest-ever level of pro bono support to community organisations.
The report reveals the firm’s comprehensive approach to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives across three key areas: environmental stewardship, social responsibility and client impact.
“We’re thrilled to publish our first Impact Report that marks an important milestone for Proximity. Since our inception, we’ve been committed to making a positive impact,” said CEO Zoe Lynam.
In a significant environmental achievement, the firm has conducted an extensive supply chain review covering 52 categories across seven business functions, identifying 80 sustainable alternatives. Proximity has committed to transitioning 20 per cent of its goods and services to sustainable suppliers in the next financial year.
The firm’s social impact efforts have notably exceeded industry standards. For five consecutive years, Proximity has surpassed the Australian Pro Bono Centre’s target of 35 pro bono hours per lawyer annually. Their community support focuses on three key areas: mental health improvement, reconciliation and empowerment, and domestic violence prevention.
“We see the real value of pro bono work for both the communities we serve and our team’s sense of purpose,” Lynam said. “We foster pro bono opportunities and encourage our employees to get involved across all three practice areas – consulting, legal and commercial.”
Currently serving on 19 federal and state panels, including the recently secured position on the Whole of Australian Government Legal Services Panel, Proximity continues to expand its influence in the public sector. The firm works with major government departments including Defence, Home Affairs and Veterans Affairs, addressing critical national challenges.
The company’s commitment to excellence has been recognised with multiple accolades, including being named a finalist for the Government Team of the Year at the 2024 Australian Law Awards, following wins in 2022 and 2017.
“We know our clients and employees want to partner with ethical, purpose-driven organisations, and we are committed to meeting those expectations,” Lynam said. “As a government focused organisation, we’re hyper aware of the ever-changing and unique landscape the public sector operates within. As we continue to grow, so too does our ability to create meaningful, lasting change.”
