Child Safeguarding

Western Australia continues the implementation of recommendations from the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) establishes the Child Safeguarding Implementation Unit.

The unit is working with State Government agencies, sector partners and peak bodies to develop resources and support organisations to improve child protection, safety and wellbeing across its portfolio areas.

There are reforms currently in progress, led by various government agencies, that will impact organisations that have contact with children, including the implementation of the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations and passage of the Working with Children (Criminal Record Checking) Amendment Bill 2022.

The National Redress Scheme recommended by the Royal Commission is five years into its 10-year operation and provides redress for a victim/survivor of institutional abuse.

Organisations may be contacted by the Redress Coordination Unit within the Department of Justice to provide information relating to an application or to meet other obligations such as providing a Direct Personal Response to a victim/survivor of abuse.

For more information on DLGSC’s child safe initiatives, head to the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) website.

You may contact the Child Safeguarding Implementation Unit by emailing childsafeguarding@dlgsc.wa.gov.au with any questions in relation to child safeguarding initiatives.
