ACNC offers free ‘Ask ACNC’ sessions

The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) will be hosting 26 free Ask ACNC sessions across the country in August.

In some locations the ACNC will be joined by representatives from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and state and territory regulators, giving charities an opportunity to get all their questions answered at once.

“While the ACNC has a dedicated Advice Services team who answer queries from the public and charities, Ask ACNC is unique in the sense that a senior executive will be presenting and taking questions,”  said ACNC Commissioner Susan Pascoe.

“Not only are Ask ACNC sessions a great opportunity for charities to come together to hear from the ACNC, but they’re also an opportunity for us, as the national regulator, to hear directly from charities about the issues they are facing.

“We always value meeting with sector representatives face-to-face.”

Pascoe highlighted the big addition to the Ask ACNC format for 2016.

“This year we have expanded the program to include a section on basic financial training for people running charities,” Pascoe said.

“The 2014 Annual Information Statement marked the first time registered charities were required to provide financial information to the ACNC, and unfortunately, this resulted in a substantial number of reporting errors.

“The purpose of the basic financial training is to assist those running registered charities with financial management and record keeping throughout the financial year, and in particular, when it comes time to report to the ACNC.”

Ask ACNC sessions will be open to all 54,000 registered charities.

Pascoe said the basic financial training will be particularly helpful for people that run small charities.
