South Australians to expect ‘jobs budget’

South Australians can expect a “jobs budget” this year that will help transition the state to the new economy, Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis said.

Koutsantonis said 6000 jobs have been added since last year’s budget and confidence is returning.

“This budget is going to be about incentivising people to get back to work,” he said.

At that stage the government said the surplus was expected to be $355 million for 2015/16, up from $43 million forecast at last year’s budget.

The Council of the Ageing said the budget must address the growing jobless rate among older South Australians, or risk leaving them poorer, in insecure housing and less socially connected in their retirement.

Opposition Leader Steven Marshall said as well as creating jobs, the budget must also address cost-of-living pressures.

“South Australians desperately need relief from rising electricity and water costs, and ever-increasing taxes and charges,” Marshall said.

“If households have more money to spend, the economy and individual businesses will grow, creating more jobs in South Australia.”
